United Healthcare Refuses to Cover My Prescriptions

I have two prescriptions. United Healthcare, our health insurance, refuses to cover either of them.

I take two monthly prescriptions. I take Pentasa for my Crohn’s Disease. I take hormonal contraception via the Patch to prevent pregnancy AND to help with my periods/cramps. Dan and I found out about a month ago that United Healthcare, the health insurance offered through his work, won’t cover the Patch. For the record, my… [Read More]

Carolina Girls… in History

An overview of some inspirational women from South Carolina.

Some of my clearest childhood memories relate to the books I read, as I was a voracious reader at a young age. In particular, I remember reading a series of biographies of famous Americans as children. I read every single one my school library owned, and I noticed that only a few of them were… [Read More]

My Husband Didn’t Take My Last Name

Some men just LOVE to criticize women who keep their last names in marriage. I've written a satirical spin on the topic. What if women said those sorts of things about men? #marriage #feminism

I’d like to extend a special shoutout to all the misogynists who troll the comment sections of basically every article about women keeping their last names upon marriage. Their stupidity inspired today’s satire. My husband and I do not share a last name. We might joke about being the Flongs, but his last name is… [Read More]

My Body is Not an Open Bar, and Not All Men are Alcoholics

This metaphor is possibly the most annoying part of #Modesty Culture.

Let me cut straight to the chase. If you earnestly plead with me that good Christian women should just cover up to help their frail, weak, pathetic Christian brothers not to lust, I will still bother to refute your points with as much politeness as I can muster. But if you offer up the ridiculous,… [Read More]

Are You My Doctor? Then Stop Talking.

I've had Crohn's Disease for almost 20 years. Stop offering me fake cures.

I have suffered in silence for almost 20 years. I will be silent no more. If you are not my gastroenterologist, please stop giving me unsolicited medical advice. I’m sure you mean well when you tell me I can cure myself if I just change my diet or start this new miracle drug or dance… [Read More]

I Don’t Work for Free (and Neither Should You)

Creatives are often expected to work for free in exchange for "exposure." Sometimes that is a good deal, but only you can determine that.

A few months ago, a well-known company that rhymes with “Jilliams Ponoma” contacted me, asking if I were interested in writing a blog post about wedding registry “do’s and don’t’s.” I was pretty excited about this opportunity since Belle Brita is a fairly new blog. I’ve also wanted to write about wedding registries from a… [Read More]
