My sweet husband was willing to spend a few minutes on our anniversary to answer these questions for y’all!
Do you have a good luck charm or ritual?
Yes, it’s having my wife drink wine.
What is your favorite dish that your wife makes for you? Do you have any fun memories of a time when she tried to cook and it totally flopped or does she get it right every time?
Taco bake. My wife even makes it special for me. (Ed note: It’s supposed to have corn in it and French fried onions on top, but I make half of it that way and half of it plain for Dan). I can’t think of any time she has messed up the cooking.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Growing up, I always wanted to be an astronaut. However, learning about the space program when I was young, I noticed a distinct trend away from manned space exploration. By the time high school hit, space was just a hobby, and looking back now, that was a good decision.
Which of the five senses is your strongest?
My eyes are pretty good after PRK… But my best sense is probably touch. My skin is very sensitive to touch, making me very ticklish, but it also means I love having my back scratched.
Would you ever run for president?
Yes, I would run for president. No, I would have no chance of getting elected. As y’all (yes, we’re in the South now) know, as readers of this blog, both of us are very libertarian. I just happen to be the more libertarian of the two of us. That being said, I would be happy to carry the banner of the party, and given its size, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of me being a candidate. However, history has shown it highly unlikely, given our voting system, of any third-party getting a significant number of votes. I think mayor is a realistic goal for retirement, though.
Bonus question: Why do you use so many commas?
(Ed note: Dan did not put any of the commas in this blog post. If he had, there would be twice as many, and all of his additions would be incorrect).
Commas are the spice of writing. I sprinkle them in to add complex flavor to my prose.

Some questions for Dan (and you) (since this post made me curious): Does Dan care what clothes you wear? (I don’t mean in a misogynist way, I mean does he have an eye for fashion when/if you ask? My husband has no eye for fashion and gives the generic “you look great” when I ask. Although one time he did tell me my dress reminded him of a carpet. Hahha) How does Dan like his eggs cooked? What are some catch phrases he uses often? (My husband quotes movies and song lyrics like all the time. Even when its socially weird, hahaha. Or when we are having a dispute! I guess everything reminds him of movies…and I never know what he is talking about!) What inside jokes do you guys have? (One of ours is “your fish is running…)
Cute post!
I will ask him to reply after work today. I can say that he usually doesn’t care what I wear. It’s funny because he’s so accustomed to me staying in lounge wear all day if I’m not leaving the house that when he came home Tuesday to see me in slacks and a top, he asked me why I was all dressed up.
I’m not sure if it’s an inside joke, but we meow at each other a lot. Like that’s how we greet each other, and sometimes that’s how we talk to each other.
1) I don’t care what clothes Brita wears. I have no eye for fashion or even color differentiation, so I leave fashion decisions up to her… I tend to give her the “you look great honey” line.
2) Eggs? I don’t eat them often, but I generally go for scrambled, though a good fried egg is quite nice.
3) Catch Phrase? Umm all of them… I quote some pretty random and obscure references all the time. I’m practically a late season Family Guy episode walking around.
4) Agreed with Brita… We definitely do animal noises a lot. Probably our *inside joke* is “keeping the magic alive” which is our code for not using the toilet in front of each other.
We know a lot about your political background, Brita- I’d like to know more about Dan’s. What set him on the path to libertarianism, etc!
That’s actually a good question, and I don’t know! I’ll have him reply tonight after work. His dad is a moderate Republican, and his mom is a moderate Democrat, so maybe he just picked the best of both? His brother Pat, and Pat’s wife Emily, are both libertarians too, but the oldest brother Nick is a FLAMING liberal.
I always find it really interesting to find out where people’s political views come from. If they’ve been molded by their family’s, if they are radically different than their family, etc
My dad is conservative, but not very politically inclined. My mom is quite liberal, though also not prone to spouting political beliefs. My oldest brother is the most fervent liberal you’ll ever meet… My middle brother is more of a hardcore libertarian than I am.
As far as what made me a libertarian, I’d have to say reading Jon Stossel’s books. I was so excited to meet him in person last year, but he wasn’t exactly what I expected… I’ve also met two other libertarian idols in the past year, Gary Johnson (along with Jim Gray) at the Libertarian Party convention and Penn Jillette in Vegas. The last one I’d like to meet someday is Judge Andrew Napolitano…
Most people assume all libertarians are young people who read Atlas Shrugged and fall in love with the ideals of Ayn Rand. While I have read Atlas Shrugged and think it was a decent book with some good ideas in it, I think painting all libertarians as Ayn Rand worshippers is not a fair assessment. That would be like painting all Communists as lovers of Joseph Stalin.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer this question for me, Dan. I find the background of people’s political beliefs really interesting! And I’m from New Mexico so I lived through the Gary Johnson as NM Governor years – he was incredibly popular in the state!
May I ask how you both feel about Ron Paul, he tends to swing back and forth between being a Republican and a Libertarian. Would you have supported his candidacy even though he’s pretty Pro-Life?
I like Ron Paul and I think he has done a huge amount to bring young people into the libertarian movement. Politically I match up with Gary Johnson a lot better. I think Ron is a bit too idealistic whereas Gary understands that bringing us back to libertarian principles will be a slow process and you have to choose the parts that you can bring the other political ideologies to our side. Gary focuses on the issues that are already popular with the people to change first.
As for Ron Paul being pro-life, I don’t agree with it, but I can’t fault him for making that choice given his unique experience based on his age, his profession, and the environment of his district. Really I can’t fault anyone for not wanting abortions, but there isn’t a better alternative out there. This is a big block for a lot of libertarians, but abortion is a lot like marijuana. It may not be ideal but it can really help some people. And most importantly, the alternatives may be a lot worse. Just because you don’t believe it is the right thing to do and would never consider it yourself doesn’t mean that everyone else should have to conform to your beliefs.
Until we can grow fetuses in a test tube and society is willing to provide for every unwanted child, abortion has to continue existing. Making it illegal helps no-one as it makes it go underground where it can’t be protected.
hahaha I am a big abuser of the comma too. Run on sentences for days! lol! That taco bake sounds really good! I might have to find a recipe for that one!
