Meet My Book Boyfriends

Welcome to the third day of #LoveBlog! Today’s prompt is Fictional Love. You can find the rest of this month’s prompts at the original post. This post contains affiliate links. If you happen to buy something, I earn money.

Before I met Dan, I had never had a boyfriend. I had never been in a relationship. It was all good, though. I took solace in my book boyfriends!

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? I've had a few! | Belle Brita

What’s a book boyfriend? It’s a silly–but rather fun–concept of wanting to “date” your favorite book characters. Usually these characters are in a relationship, sometimes with a character you yourself relate to. Plus, talking up “book boyfriends” is a marketing technique used by many authors of Young Adult and New Adult novels.

My very first fictional crush was an admittedly weird one. Please don’t judge me! In middle school, I was a huge fan of the Animorphs series. I developed a fictional crush on the character Tobias. Why is this particularly odd? He spent most of the series in the form of a red-tailed hawk. So… yeah. Weird. But the cover art of when he was human was really cute.

My most recent fictional love is for one of the main characters in Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels trilogy and subsequent sequels. I recently reread the trilogy, plus read all the subsequent novels for the first time. Daemon is the gorgeous, powerful warlord prince with a strong moral code. But if he’s not your type, this series is filled with fascinating, good-looking characters.

One last book boyfriend is from Jessica Park’s Flat-Out Love. (Read my review of Flat-Out Love, the companion novella Flat-Out Matt, and the sequel Flat-Out Celeste last year). Matt is smart, skinny, and nerdy, with a collection of nerdy t-shirts. Does that sound like anyone you know? Yes, I tend to be attracted to characters who remind me of Dan!

As you might recall, I’m in the middle of a book challenge. I wonder if I’ll fall in love with a new book boyfriend this month!
