Duct Tape Light Switch DIY

Post contains Amazon Affiliate links. See my Disclosure for more information.

Several months ago, I found this awesome pin to decorate light switch covers with washi tape. And then I found this Paris-patterned Duck tape on clearance! Clearly I had to combine the two ideas to decorate my light switch covers for my home office.

Fun and easy light switch cover #DIY with duct tape!

I have the best of intentions with DIY projects, but my follow-through could use some work. Luckily for me, Dan used his period of unemployment to do work around the house, including my DIY projects. He’s so wonderful. He even took pictures of the process for my blog!

Dan finished these duct tape light switch covers in about 10 minutes. Granted, he’s very good with projects requiring precision.

Materials for Duct Tape Light Switch Covers

Materials needed to DIY light switch covers

  • Plain light switch covers
  • Colorful duct tape (I used Duck Tape brand)
  • Exacto knife
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Carefully apply the first piece of duct tape, lining it up with the edge of the light switch plate.

Step 2: Trim the edges with the Exacto knife.

Carefully trim the edges of the duct tape.

Step 3: Apply a second piece of duct tape, carefully lining up the design with the first strip.

Line up the second piece of duct tape with the first.

Step 4: Continue with Steps 2 and 3 until the entire light switch plate is covered with duct tape.

Duct tape light switch plate is completely covered and just needs a final trim. Light switch plate is covered with duct tape and trimmed on the edges

Step 5: Using the Exacto knife, carefully cut out the duct tape blocking the holes for the light switches. Make small cuts to open up the holes for the screws.

Carefully cut the duct tape to reveal the holes for the light switches.

Hang it up with a screwdriver, and you’re done! Now you have a beautiful duct tape light switch cover to spruce up your home. Since Dan and I live in a rental home, we only did two covers for my home office. When we move into our own house, I hope to decorate all the light switch covers! While I’ll probably paint at least a few of them, several will be decorated with duct tape.

Easy DIY for a duct tape light switch cover

I’m so grateful to Dan for making my duct tape light switch plates! The wallpaper in my home office might be a little old-fashioned, but these Parisian light switches brighten up the space.
