Wow, April has gone by quickly! We closed on our house on March 30th, so this month has been all about moving and cleaning and unpacking.
April’s theme for Getting to Know You is Recreation. It’s been hard to balance our lives this month, so I’m glad Dan and I can reflect on our usual approach to play.
As a kid, what was your favorite sport or physical activity? Why?
Brita: Ha, I have never been a fan of sports. Not even as a kid! But I took jazz and tap lessons starting in the 3rd grade, all the way until I graduated high school. I loved to dance, and I excelled in my classes.
Dan: I was a baseball player. I wasn’t necessarily the best at fielding, hence why I played right field most of the time… But man, could I hit! Not the long ball, but any ball. I’m probably the only person to be called out for stepping across home plate to hit a ball. Who knew that was a rule?
How do you relax after a stressful day or week?
Brita: I’m pretty sure the answer “with alcohol” would be inappropriate, albeit partially truthful. I am a big fan of hot baths, so that is one way I relax. Reading a book or watching Netflix also help me relax.

What hobbies or activities do you share with your loved ones (spouse, children, friends, etc.)?
Brita: Dan and I play Pokémon Go together! The big hullabaloo is over, but we still enjoy it. Plus it encourages us to walk frequently and explore new areas.
My dad and I enjoy going to local concerts and festivals in the Greenwood area. There’s nothing quite like listening to a live band while eating yummy food!
Dan: Is engineering considered a hobby? My dad, Patrick, and I do a lot of projects together. There tends to be a lot of conflict on a multi-engineer job, though.
How do you balance work and play?
Brita: I set timers to do certain tasks with my blog or around the house. Then I take a short break. Periodically I give myself longer breaks, usually timed to a show on Netflix or so many chapters of a book. That’s my day-to-day balance. Overall, Dan and I travel quite a bit, and we occasionally give ourselves an entire weekend day of laziness.
Dan: Having a 9-80 schedule really helps. (I work 9-hour days Monday through Thursday, and I get every other Friday off). Aside from that, I try and schedule work trips to coincide with recreation as much as I can. I also try not to stay too late at work or arrive too early.
What is May’s theme for Getting to Know You? Wellness.
- What does moderation mean to you?
- How do you prioritize your overall well-being?
- What small changes did you implement in the past that affect your health and wellness today?
- How do you practice self-care?
Next month’s link-up will be May 30, the last Tuesday of the month.
It would be super-awesome if you wanted to grab the code below and use my spiffy graphic to link back to this blog link-up. But understand if you don’t really love me and you choose to participate in the blog link-up without mentioning me at all. It’s cool.
If y’all noticed the one identical answer above, this is the conversation that led to it.
Me: How do you relax after a stressful day or week?
Dan: (silent)
Me: Are you reading my answer first?!
Dan: Can’t you just copy and paste your answer for mine? It’s true!
So, yeah. Hot baths, Netflix, books, and alcohol solve all problems.
